‘Because no two individuals have exactly the same expectations and desires, conflict is a natural part of our interactions with others’ – this great quote is taken from the Thomas-Kilmann website.

It is extremely accurate and exactly why at Fiona McBride Consulting we find this self-scoring assessment model (which only takes 15 minutes to complete) is one of the most useful and effective conflict-handling models out there.

The Thomas-Kilmann Instrument is designed to measure a person’s behavior in conflict situations. Typically conflict situations are those in which the concerns of two people appear to be incompatible. We know these situations arise regularly within organisations and teams and rather than let these situations remain an issue it is best to address them and work them out.The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) is the world’s best-selling tool for helping people understand how different conflict-handling styles affect interpersonal and group dynamics—and for empowering them to choose the appropriate style for any situation.

The TKI assesses an individual’s typical behavior in conflict situations and describes it along two dimensions: assertiveness and cooperativeness. It provides detailed information about how that individual can effectively use five different conflict-handling modes, or styles.
